Your alarm goes off. You make coffee. You have quiet time with the Lord. You freshen up. You make breakfast. You start your homeschool day. It’s a typical morning.
It's only 9am and you are doing your best at keeping your patience and offering grace. These thoughts go through your mind: “Why am I running thin already?” or “It’s going to be a long day, I can tell.” or “Maybe we should just take this day off.”
You’re not alone, mama. You and me and many others have been there time and time again. I’ve had so many mornings like those. Something had to give. This can’t be what homeschool is, right? Trying to keep it together every morning?
100% of homeschool parents enjoy the freedom homeschooling offers. Ok, that’s not an official statistic but I would assume it’s true! We have options of curriculum, homeschooling styles, co-ops, instilling Christian values, the list goes on.
Most of us have lived our lives with the habit of waking up and going to school. I don’t know about you but I went to public school K-12. My routine, probably like yours, looked like this: wake up, school, homework, play, eat, sleep, repeat. Because we’ve done it this way for so long, it’s hard to see there could be any other way.
So what’s the one thing that made the biggest difference to our homeschooling days?
Simple, we homeschool in the afternoon. I know, I know. It’s very unconventional, kind of rebellious, but oh so simple of a change with a HUGE impact to our days, you guys. There are so many things we love about schooling in the afternoon versus the morning which you can read more here.
Here’s what our routine looks like now: Wake up whenever we want, Bible time, breakfast, play, errands (if needed), lunch, school, play, dinner, bed.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a magic pill and there are still days that patience & grace are needed in abundance, but what a consistent difference such a simple change to our routine this has made. And not just me, for him, too!
Have you been running thin lately? I encourage you to try it for just one day. Tell me how it goes in the comments below! Have fun homeschooling!
